Intonaco describes a technique
of using contemporary construction products to simulate the unique qualities of
traditional fresco painting - deep richly layered colors, textured surfaces and
overall color brilliance.
Intonaco painting substitutes
contemporary construction products such as lightweight joint compound for plaster
of Paris, and enhances the spectrum of pigmentation to include acrylic, watercolor
and even pastel chalk.
This results in unique surface qualities, including
- Rich pigment layering and tinting
- Surface sculpting and relief
- Integration of found objects, such as broken mirrors, wire, metal scraps,
etc.
Here
is how it is done
|
|
Sheets of recycled OSB
(oriented strand board) are cut to desired sizes.Edges
are sanded and beveled to minimize splintering. |
|
| Larger
pieces are reinforced with glued and screwed 1" x 2" wood slats. |
|
|
|
|
Faces
are primed with high-quality primer |
|
| Mirrors
and/or other found objects are glued and embedded. |
|
|
|
A
primary layer of joint compound is applied. The surface is built up with
additional layers of compound and sanded smooth. |
|
| Images
are sketched and developed.
Paint and pigments are applied. The
surface is sealed. Pieces
are individually signed, titled, numbered and logged.Hangers
and additional framing are attached |
